School Board Passes Safe Haven Resolution
January 12, 2017
I am proud to inform you that at last night’s Board meeting, our Board voted unanimously to approve a “Safe Haven” Resolution brought forward by Board President De’Shawn Woolridge.
The Resolution states that immigration officials may not enter schools within our district without prior written approval from the Superintendent and the district is restricting the sharing of student files that could be used to determine the immigration status of children. Please note, our school district already does not and will not collect any citizenship data as part of our enrollment process. The Resolution also reaffirms the district's continued support of diversity and tolerance.
We will be organizing some informational activities for parents, families and students in the upcoming weeks to provide our community with access to resources and information regarding their legal rights.
We thank our Board, all of our District employees, and our community for their continued support and for keeping our children first.
“My job as president of Pittsburg Unified School District’s School Board is to help ensure all students in our community have access to an education, no matter their immigration status, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, or economic status,” said De’Shawn Woolridge, PUSD School Board President. “Right now, there are many fears and uncertainty in our community related to the presidential election and coming inauguration. If our children feel unsafe, they are less likely to learn. As a Board it is our duty to reassure students and families in Pittsburg and help calm those fears. Children are safe in our schools and will continue to be safe. Therefore, as a School Board we are adopting the “All Students Accessing A Quality Education - A Safe Haven Resolution,” to show our Pittsburg community that we will not just say our district is safe, we will make a declaration to our parents and families with this resolution.”
