Ms. Furuyama

Hello!

My name is Ms. Furuyama, and I am so excited to be working with you this year! 2020 has been an interesting one so far, to say the least! But, where there is challenge, there is also great opportunity for growth. Know that I am working hard to deliver a class for you that is relevant, engaging, impactful, and rigorous. I have high expectations of YOU, and you should have high expectations of ME. Together, we will build a dynamic community of learners.

This year I will be teaching 11th grade English 3 and ELD 3. I'm new to Pittsburg High School, but I grew up in the Bay Area and graduted from Northgate High School in Walnut Creek. I put myself through college working multiple jobs. I attended Diablo Valley College, San Francisco State, and CSU East Bay where I ultimately earned a B.A. magna cum laude in Environmental Studies. After graduation, I dabbled in other work before landing in the field of education. I hold a CA multiple-subject credential as well as a single-subject English credential. I have completed coursework for my master's degree in education from Brandman University and am awaiting review of my portfolio for degree conferment. This fall, I will be returning to school for a graduate certificate in instructional technology. I'm a busy student too!

I have been working in education since 2007 and serving as a CA credentialed English teacher since 2010. In that time, I have worked in high school settings, middle school, and adult education. I derive a deep sense of satisfaction in helping my students of all levels and abilities to reach their maximum potential. I look forward to learning about you and your goals, and to helping you develop the language and literacy skills you need to be successful in college, career, and life.

Beyond the classroom, I am an avid outdoor enthusiast: I love hiking, river rafting, and canyoneering especially. I also have great appreciation for nature in general and animals. I have worked in wildlife rehabilitation for many years which brings me a lot of joy. Until recently, I also served as a professional member of a local search and rescue unit. I live with three spoiled rotten cats, a finch, and a chicken.

Please reach out to me when needs arise. I know that there will be many questions and concerns as we move forward into this unprecedented school year.
