Hello and welcome to 8th grade English and Language Arts!

My name is Shawnie Elizabeth Gustaveson. I am a second-year teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. Junior High School and I am excited to continue working with the Tiger TEAM. I expect to learn with my scholars to create memorable experiences as they complete their last year before the transition to High School. My class will focus on critical thinking and metacognitive skills as scholars analyze and understand a full array of novels, stories, articles, and poems from multiple cultures and time periods.

My creative writing elective class is based on scholars reading and composing creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry that speaks to a vast amount of people and our own scholars. Based on detailed writing, character arcs, creative dialogue, and meaningful themes, creative writing helps foster a growth mindset and aids scholars in developing their writing and organizational skills. Stepping away from structured, five-paragraph essays, scholars will be able to express their creative side as they share their powerful experiences and voices through their stories.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading True Crime novels, baking, taking care of my plants (some would argue too many plants) and kayaking at Lake Tahoe.

Fun facts: I worked at a bakery throughout college and I played five instruments throughout my life (so far).
