Mrs. Angela Stevens-Stevenson is the very proud principal of Martin Luther King, Jr. Junior High School, the newest school and third junior high in the Pittsburg Unified School District (PUSD). This school began its first year in existence in the fall of 2012.
Mrs. Stevenson began her career as a teacher 36 years ago in Louisiana after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Northeast Louisiana University (now Monroe Louisiana University). After teaching two years in Louisiana, she moved to Oakland, California with her family where she taught for three years. In August of 1988, Mrs. Stevenson joined PUSD as a teacher at Los Medanos Elementary School. After fifteen years of teaching there, Mrs. Stevenson received her Masters of Arts in Education from UC Berkeley and served as Vice Principal for a little more than two years before becoming Principal there. During her reign as Principal, Los Medanos Elementary received several awards. They included three Title I Academic Achievement Awards, a California Honor Roll School Award, an Equity School Award, and a Distinguished School Award. Los Medanos was the very first school in PUSD to reach an API of 800, reaching 807 in 2007.
The opportunity to open the new school on the site of the former El Pueblo Elementary site was an unexpected blessing for Principal Stevens-Stevenson. Martin Luther King, Jr. Junior High School is the only school in our district and county named for Dr. King. Some of our current staff members attended the site as it later became a preschool named for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mrs. Stevens-Stevenson will begin her 31st year in PUSD this fall and 7th year at Martin Luther King, Jr. Junior High where the Tiger Team is Carrying on the Dream of Dr. King.
