    TED TALK Reflection Questions

    What Makes You Special?

Directions:  Please answer the following questions in complete sentences in no less than 7 complete sentences.  Provide examples for each answer. Please submit your work to rchahal@pittsburg.k12.ca.us by April 10th.

    1.  Why did Mariana Atencio’s father send his daughters to Minnesota?
    2.  What does the statement “When you’re different you have to work at belonging” mean?
    3. What sparked Mariana’s disappointment in having Fatima as a roommate?
    4. When we label people as different it dehumanizes them in a way.  They become the “other” and they are not worthy of our time. Not our problem.   They, the “other” are probably the cause of our problems. Interpret what this means.  Do you agree or disagree?
    5. What made Mariana want to become a journalist?
    6. In 2008, Mariana became the “other.”  Which life experiences prepared her for this?
    7. “Being different also means thinking differently.”  What does this mean and what are some real life applications for you?
    8. You can’t let those differences define you.  How do you think people have allowed their perceived differences to define them?  Provide specific examples.
