Helpful Student Tips for Academic Tasks
Posted by Andrea Riley-Sorem on 4/27/2020 10:00:00 AMJust few quick tips/reminders for students as they work online...
1. Read the directions CAREFULLY for each and every task or question. What exactly are you looking for? Are you to select more than one correct answer?
2. Look at word parts to help you understand new vocabulary.
- Prefixes, suffixes, & roots can be found in your word work notebook.
3. Go back to the text (re-read) when you are unsure of the answer to a question/task.
4. Slow down! Don't rush! I'm noticing that some students are spending 30-60 SECONDS on certain assignments. Chances are that you'll make lots of mistakes if you complete work at that speed (check your scores).
5. Do your personal best. It's OK if you don't understand a question or are struggling with a task. Go back to the directions, re-read the text, use your notebook, ask for help, take a break and come back... just please don't give up or rush through it.
I am doing the tasks as well (a.k.a. Casper Riley). I have made mistakes (What?! The Teacher?!) and 9 times out of 10 I misread the question or directions. The tips listed above will really help you be successful. :)

Sample Schedule for Learning at Home:
Posted by Andrea Riley-Sorem on 4/20/2020 9:45:00 AMHere is a breakdown of time to be spent on school work each day. It is just an example and each family should adjust things (times, order of work, adding in familiy ideas/tasks...) as needed. Also, if you were unable to pick up your student's workbooks & notebooks before break, there is another opportunity THIS THURSDAY, April 23, from 8-11 a.m. to do so.
DAILY SCHEDULE:
8:30 a.m. - Wake up, breakfast, etc.
9:30-11:30 a.m. - ELA (reading, writing, word work...)
- word work: academic vocabulary/word study on Freckle
- comprehension: articles and/or skill work on Freckle
- writing: quickwrites and/or full write
- choice reading: student selects their own reading material
11:30 a.m. - lunch time and play time
1:00-3:00 p.m. - Math & Typing Practice
- math facts practice on Freckle
- math mini lessons on Freckle
- typing practice on Typing Club (see link in learning resources)
3:00 p.m. on...
- play time (games, exercise outside, etc.)
- chores
- family time
- dinner
This is just a SUGGESTED format but it is NOT mandatory. If your student is not able to get on a device they can do work in their social studies & science workbooks for reading and their math standards practice book for math OR make a math facts chart/flash cards on their own. The possibilities are endless. Reminder: I can see all work done on Freckle. Any other assignments please take a picture of it and send it to me. I love looking at their work!

SUPPLY PICK UP: THURSDAY, APRIL 9TH!
Posted by Andrea Riley-Sorem on 4/6/2020 9:30:00 AMHello all! This Thursday, April 9th, from about 8-10 a.m. you will be able to pick up your student's school supplies:
- personal property (pencil boxes, books, recorders...)
- workbooks for extra practice & reading material (social studies, science, and math standards practice)
- student journals & notebooks (word work, math, reading, writing & grammar, & teambuilding)
- special "treats" from me (bucket fillers, name tags, birthday bracelets, a beginning of year letter they wrote to me that I'll be responding to, plus a few other fun items)
The spiral notebooks and composition journals will provide more space for your child to complete their assignments. Also, please let me know if your child needs any pencils, crayons, or other supplies. I'll add them in!
I will be at school Thursday as long as the custodians are there so message me if you or another family member can come at a different time and I'll do my best. Unfortunately, a different day will not be an option this week or next (April 13-17 is spring break). Hopefully I'll catch a glimpse of you on THURSDAY!

A few reminders...
Posted by Andrea Riley-Sorem on 3/23/2020 11:15:00 AMHello all! A few things that I forgot to mention while setting up the weekly assignments...
1. All online activities, Freckle & Typing Club, I am able to monitor online. I can see results as well as what has been completed.
2. For the activities that are not a part of an online program, word work and writing tasks, there are a few ways students can show their work to me:
- Take a picture of their handwritten work and send it to me via email or ClassDojo messages.
- Type up their work on a device and send me a copy of it via email.
If those ideas don't work for you and your student, you can keep their work in a folder or notebook to give to me at a later date.
3. I did put deadlines on the activities, but I can always reassign them to your student if they need more time. Also note that I forgot to put a real due date on the writing tasks so know that they have through Friday to work on it. No worries!
Please take care, keep taking advantage of learning opportunities that pop up (life skills...), and you'll hear from me again soon! :)
