1st Grade PE

  • Hello parents and students,

    It is important each day to play and practice the things you've learned so far this year. So pick a few things each day and practice, practice, practice.  So when we come back next year we can start with 2nd grade activities instead of going back to relearn the 1st grade activities.   Parents, adults and guardians, take some time from your busy schedules each day and pick a few skills or games listed below and have fun with your student or students you will both benefit from these activities in the long run.

    Do you remember what we've done?

    Students please be patient with your adult, many of them don't remember PE being this way and you can teach them something new and fun.

    Here's a list of what we've learned so far...

    When we run:

    • Stay away from each other
    • Run outside the yellow line
    • Breath in your nose, breath out your mouth
    • Do no hold hands when you run
    • All the way to the four square
    • Don't give up...
    • Walk through the Four squares to the last Four square
    • Then water, bathroom and wash your hands

    Do you remember how to drink water from the water fountain? 

    • Line up, facing the water fountain   
    • Count 5 mississippi's once the water hits their lips. 
    • Do this for every student in front of you

    Remember if you are still thirsty go to the end of the line and do it all over again.

    Under Hand toss

    • feet together
    • aim, placing the hand you write with on top of the hand you dont write with, look at your bean bag and your cone
    • arm of the hand you write with back
    • hand you don't write with pointing at the target
    • step with the foot opposite the hand you write with to the target
    • swing and switch your hands for balance and toss the bean bag at the target
    • toss all the bags, saying and doing all the steps

    Inside the Donut

    On the Donut

    Q: What counts?

         A: Below the waist.

    Q: What kind of throws are okay?

         A: Underhand toss or Bowling.

    Q: Can we step inside the Donut when we Bowl or Underhand toss?

         A: no.

    Q: Can we reach inside the Donut to get the ball?

         A: no.

    Q: Do we have to wait for the ball to come all the way out of the Donut to get it?

        A: yes.

    Q: Can we move in our space?

       A: yes.

    Q: Can we move around other people to other spaces?

       A: No, we have to stay and play in our space.

    Q: If the ball passes through my legs, who can get the ball?

       A: only you.

    Q: If a ball passes between two other students, who can go get that ball?

       A: only those two people.

    Q: If a ball passes between two people can someone from anywhere on the Donut go get the ball?

       A: no, that's cheating and not fair to the other students.

    Q: Should we pay attention to the ball?

       A: yes, this way when the ball comes to me I can play the game.

    Q: When you are hit below the waist, who do youswitch places with?

      A: The person that hit you.

     

    Jumping rope

    Remember hopping is one foot and jumping is two feet.

    Warm up using the swing step around for 30 seconds

    Rope turning takes practice.  There is no jumping, just swinging.  

    • hold your arms away from your body
    • make light fists with your hands
    • turn your wrists in small circles starting from the back to the front, 30 times
    • now pick up the rope
    • hold the handles away from your body 
    • start the rope behind you
    • raise your arms up and pull the rope down over your head so it hits your feet
    • count out loud -1
    • raise your arms back up and pull the rope down over your head so it hits the back of you feet
    • do this 30 times

     

    Remember swing the rope over your head and step over the rope with one foot and lift the other foot up so the rope will pass under easily and you will avoid being tangled in the rope.  Swing the rope again and step again.  Swing, step, swing, step, swing step.

    As you get better you can go faster.

    • don't duck your head
    • look where you are going
    • step like people
    • don't look down
    • do your best

     

    Practice ankle jumps without the rope.

    • feet together
    • on your toes
    • stand up straight
    • eyes forward
    • light jump

    No monster jumps or hulk jumps, just light on you toes jumps.  If you jump and bend your knees you will tire quickly and want to quit, try 5 in a row without stopping, rest and try again when you can do these easily without getting too tired add 5 more.  Keep adding 5 until your up to 30 without getting tired.  Don't forget to drink some water.  Not too much, if you do drink too much theres a good chance of throwing up.  So a couple sips wont hurt.  When you can do 30 toe jumps in a row without getting too tired lets add the rope.

    • count out loud when it hits your feet

    After 30 times add your toe jumps to your turns.  Your going to want to look down, don't.  Look straight ahead and use the edge of your eye and just before the rope hits the ground your going to want to jump. remember dont stop turning and don't sit down when you jump or bend your knees.

     

    Remember there are two types of jumps and about 125 tricks.  We get to practice about 50 by 5th grade.

     

    Single jump looks and sounds like this:  jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, these are or can be very fast and is for the more advanced students with a sports background.  Rope swings are quick.

    Double jump looks and sounds like this: jump, bounce - jump, bounce - jump, bounce - this is a slower paced type, more for relaxed ropers. Rope swings are pretty slow.

     

    Basketball Skills

    Q:      What size ball do we use and why?

         A:    A my size ball works best.  

    Explaination: My size balls make them easier to control and are the right weight and have the proper curve for smaller and younger students to dribble and shoot.

     

    Ball Handling Skills

    • find the hand you write with
    • the fatty part toward the end of your fingers, not the tips
    • are called 'FINGER PADS'
    • using your FINGER PADS place the ball on the ground
    • Starting at the tip of the shoe of the foot you kick with, using only your finger pads on both hands, roll the ball around your foot back to the front and count 1 time up to number 10
    • Switch to the other foot and do 10 more
    • Pick up and move the ball to the knee of the side you write with, using only your finger pads on both hands, roll the ball around your knee back to your knee and count 1 time up to number 10
    • Switch to the other knee and do 10 more
    • Pick up the ball and place it on your belly button, starting with the hand you write with roll the ball around your body 10 times, every time you pass your belly button count
    • When your done start at your belly button and try it in the other direction

     

    Dribbling

    Q:  What do we use to dribble a ball?

         A:  FINGER PADS

    Remember...

    • Lock your wrist
    • Bend at the elbow
    • Use your whole arm
    • Push down with your FINGER PADS
    • The ball should dribble about waist high
    • Look where your going
    • 10 dribbles with the hand you write with switch to the hand you don't write with 3 times each side
    • Dribble at all levels Medium level on your knees, dribble in front of your knees, dribble next to your legs and dribble behind each foot
    • Low level, sitting on the ground, using the hand you write with, dribble on the side of the hand you write with and the hand you don't write with dribbling on the side you don't write with.
    • Cross your legs dribble in front of your crossed legs, use both hands 10 times on each side.

     

    Shooting      

    •  Start with your feet together
    • Take a half step forward using the foot you kick with
    • line your foot and knee up with the basketball hoop or net
    • place the ball on your knee and place your hand on the belly of the ball (the belly of the ball are where the lines or ribs of the ball are the farthest apart)
    • place the finger tips of the hand you write with below a line or rib, palm down, holding the ball in place
    • place the hand you don't write with on the side of the ball where all the lines come together, for balance
    • dribble the nall 2 to 3 times
    • replace the ball on your knee realign your foot and knee with the basket
    • keep your knee bent
    • Lift the ball up in the hand you write with, slightly above your head
    • keep your elbow bent back, wrist and hand lined up with the basket 
    • hand you don't write with still placed on the side of the ball for balance 
    • eye watching the ball and the basket

    To shoot

    • At the same time straighten your knee and elbow, pull the hand you don't write with down to keep the ball moving up and balanced
    • Push the ball straight up, the ball will start to roll backwards by itself, when it gets to the tips of your fingers, snap your wrist forward
    • the ball will go up, spin backwards and if you are aiming for the top middle line of the square on the backboard and it hits pretty close, the ball should go in
    • If it doesn't, don't give up, try your steps again

    REMEMBER...

    Practice, practice, practice....

     

    Scooter Boards

    • Safety First, always wear shoes with socks. 
    • Make sure your shoes are tied. 
    • Make sure jackets or sweatshirts are not dangling over the side of the board. 
    • Keep your bottom in the middle of the board, to avoid head injuries. 
    • Keep your fingers and hands inside the handles to avoid smashed fingers.
    • Use your feet for gas and brakes.
    • Always look over your shoulder if you are scooting backwards. 
    • Remember no crashing. 
    • Keep your feet out from under the boards, others may not see you and injure you more.

     

    Volleyball Skills

    Tossing:

    • Hands out
    • arms down
    • feet shoulder width apart
    • bend your knees
    • head facing foerward   -   Toss
    • Straighten your legs, lift your arms and flick your wrists up

    Depending where you aim the ball is where it goes.  A self toss willl have the ball go up and back down to your arms to bump or set.

    Bumping:

    Finding your preferred grip:

    • hand in hand, thumbs in, wrists up, arms straight and pointed down
    • fists together, thumbs flat, arms straight and pointed down
    • fist in hand, thumbs flat, arms straight and pointed down

    Proper stance and form:

    • Bumping the ball straight in front of you, stagger your feet,
    • foot you don't kick with half a step in front of you,
    • foot you do kick with half a step behind you,
    • bend your knees.  

    Get under the ball and have the ball land between your elbow and wrists, lift your arms up and forward, not straight up, but no higher than your neck.

    Setting:

    • Form a window above your head, hand open, palm out, your left hand, with your thumb out will form the letter 'L', your right hand, palm out with your thumb out will form a backward '_l' this is called a WINDOW.
    • Hold your window above your head, make sure its smaller than your head, if its bigget than your head there is a tendency the ball will hit you in the face.  

    REMEMEBER always protect your face.

    • Feet shoulder width apart
    • bend your knees
    • bend your elbows
    • look through your window

    Set

    • Move under the ball with your elbows bent
    • feet apart, bend your knees
    • as the ball falls toward you, right before the ball touches your fingers
    • straighten your knees and elbows
    • push the ball up and snap your wrists out
    • you control what the ball does, up and over, up and back or straight up.
    • move out of the way. 

    REMEMEBER always protect your face.

    Serving:

    • Shoulder of the hand you don't write with to the net
    • Hand out (hand you don't write with) Place the ball in this hand
    • Elbow (of the hand you don't write with) in
    • Make a fist (hand you write with)
    • Place this fist (hand you write with) under the hand (you don't write with)
    • Pull the (the hand you write with) fist back
    • Step to the net
    • Roll the ball  (turn the wrist of the hand you don't write with) toward your fist
    • Serve (Swing your fist down and up hitting your wrist, under the ball)
    • Follow through (Keep your arm straight and lift it up above your head)
    • Drag the toe of your kicking foot
