Students will be active learners who are motivated, and possess a high sense of personal responsibility for their education, values and behavior. Families will be responsible for supporting their child's education by providing basic needs, discipline, structure at home and help with homework.
Faculty and staff will provide a safe and equitable learning environment by valuing and fostering diversity through open communication. Teachers meet frequently to work on purposeful and productive planning to deliver rigorous and relevant standards based instruction that is assessment driven.
School wide expectations are clearly defined, communicated, and consistently implemented. Our goal is to identify and address student needs through systematic intervention and enrichment programs. We will continue to grow in order to become a California Distinguished School.
OVERVIEW OF FOOTHILL
Foothill Elementary School is located in the city of Pittsburg, California (population 60,000). It is a suburban, industrial city in Contra Costa County. The community is ethnically diverse and that diversity is reflected in the school population (see following section).
Foothill was built in 1977 and has a "pod" design, in which four of the structures have five connecting classrooms with a center common room and teacher work area. The school also has a Library, a Multipurpose Room (cafeteria/stage), three playground structures, a blacktop play area, 2 grass play areas, and a separate kindergarten grass play area. Every teacher has a computer, and every computer has high speed internet access.
During the 2011-2012 school year, we have twenty-five teachers with self-contained classes. We also have two special education teachers: Learning Center and SDC. In addition, we have a Counseling Enriched Classroom (CEC), a preschool and a county program classroom. To end, there are two "prep" teachers who teach Physical Education and Science. Twelve of the twenty-five self-contained classrooms are Dual Immersion where students receive instruction in Spanish, as per formal parent waivers (written requests). Our Dual Immersion Model begins with 90% Spanish/10% English instruction in K, moving to 80%/20% in1st grade, 80%/20% in 2nd grade, 70%/30% in 3rd grade, and 50%/50% in both 4th grade and 5th grades. We have class size reduction in all Kindergarten - 5th grade classes.
Students receive services from a school psychologist and a Speech and Language therapist, if needed. Students receive additional support from part time instructional aides. There are three cafeteria staff, two full time and one half time custodians, two classified clerical staff in the office, one library technician, one media center aide, one parent coordinator, and a student service aide. Three aides also work as yard duty supervisors. We also offer Lincoln Center services to selected students. There is an after-school program managed by the STS Academy.
