Summer Programs
The PUSD High School Summer program gives students the opportunity to recover credits and make progress toward graduation. Highly-qualified, certificated teachers and instructional assistants teach math, English, science, social science, and English Language Development courses. This summer intervention also gives students the opportunity to reinforce the skills they will need to pass the California High School Exit Exam.
The Pittsburg High Summer Algebra Academy is an intense five-week, six-hour per day instructional program designed to assist incoming freshman and current high school students in refining their math skills in order to demonstrate proficiency on Algebra 1 content standards. The goal of this program is to enable PUSD students to enroll in a Geometry or an Algebra 2 class in the upcoming school year. To participate in this program, students should obtain applications from their current school beginning in May.
Summer Math Institute
Location: Los Medanos College
PUSD, in partnership with Los Medanos Community College, is offering the Summer Math Institute (SMI) for junior high school students for the tenth consecutive year. The program is patterned after the Jose Valdes Math Institute in San Jose. SMI is an intense five-week, instructional program in mathematics in which students are provided with focused instruction on specific math concepts varying from basic whole number skills to the skills necessary for success in the first semester of Algebra 1. To participate in this program, students should obtain applications from their current junior high school beginning in April.
Special Education (ESY) for Students in Service Specific Classes
The PUSD Summer program for students in special education service specific classes grades K-8 gives students the opportunity to continue the school year in order to prevent them from losing valuable instructional experiences. Students are taught by highly qualified special education teachers and paraprofessionals. Students must be referred to this program through the IEP process
Elementary and Junior High Summer School
Due to state budget constraints, regular education summer school will not be offered for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Intervention for elementary and junior high school students has been provided during the 2009-2010 regular school year, and will continue throughout the 2010-2011 school year.
