Superintendent
Dear Community of Pittsburg:
I am pleased to update you on a number of things happening in the Pittsburg Unified School District. First, I am very excited to share our most recent API test scores from the state. For the first time, the Pittsburg district-wide scores topped the 700 API mark with a total score of 718. Ten of our twelve schools scored above the 700 compared to only six last year. Our scores have increased every year for the past ten years and that is due to the outstanding teachers and staff, concerned and active parents, top notch
administrators, and a community that supports their schools.
We have also seen the transformation of many of our schools over the past few years. Pittsburg High School has been rebuilt and opened for this school year. Pittsburg High School classrooms and facilities were outdated and needed to be replaced to meet the demands of a 21st century education and the expectations of our community. The new campus has transformed Pittsburg High School from an old worn out facility to a new state of the art modern high school.
In recent years, we have also opened a new elementary (Marina Vista) school and a new junior high (Rancho Medanos) school. Rancho has replaced Central Junior High and Marina Vista was built to accommodate increasing enrollment in the elementary schools. We have also completed extensive repairs and renovations at schools throughout the district. All of these projects have been completed because local voters supported bond measures to provide local funds to build our schools. These funds were then used to attract an additional $90 million in state and local matching funds to complete the building of new schools and the renovation of older schools.
But, there is more to be accomplished. We need another junior high school to avoid overcrowding. Our oldest schools, Heights and Parkside were built in 1952. Highlands was built in 1963. These schools are outdated and need to be renovated to provide the students in these schools with up to date, modern classrooms. The PUSD Board of Education approved Measure L for the November 2, 2010 ballot to address facility needs.
Sincerely
Linda K. Rondeau
