The concert took place at San Jose State University on January 9th at 1:45 p.m. The guest conductor of the 90 piece band was Tim Harris, director of bands at Chabot College in Hayward. April 9, 2009  Heights Basketball Players Rise to the Challenge :: On February 12th in conjunction with the Hoops For Heart, Heights P.E. teacher Jerry Morucci held the NBA Skills Challenge. It is a dribbling, passing and shooting event where students are timed on an obstacle course and awarded ribbons according to their age group. If the six winners of this event had fast enough times in the contest held at Heights the student would qualify to go on to the Regional NBA Skills Contest which were last Wednesday, April 1st.

Four students from Heights ended up competing. Out of 50+ students, 3 of them Amari Mouton, Daniela Valasco, and Malik Ward finished third at the Regional event held at Oracle Arena last Wednesday. Taynay Burton finished first in her division and was named "Warrior Team Champion" and qualified to go to the National NBA Skills Challenge to be held in Florida next month. If her time is one of the four quickest times out of the 34 Regional Championships around the U.S., the NBA will fly her and one family member to Florida to participate in the event.
Congratulations to Jerry and his athletes for their athletic excellence!

Just thought I'd let everyone know we have four very talented musicians from PHS (2008/09 Drum Major Roy Gocuan, 2009/10 Drum Major Dominic Escajeda, the 2008 recipient of the Pete Escovedo Summer Camp Scholarship, Isaac Fematt and trumpeter Fernando Lozano) performing with Boss Nouveau, a band dedicated to preserving the music of high-note trumpet legends like Bill Chase, Bud Brisbois, Maynard Ferguson, and others.

They will be playing 2 sets of Maynard Ferguson music or approximately 12 of his most popular songs dating from 1953 through 1985 at the Walnut Creek Elks Club tomorrow night from 6:30 to 9:00pm. A mere $10 gets you admission to the concert AND DINNER!! But you'll need to call the Walnut Creek Elks at 935-1811 to reserve your spot as no tickets will be sold at the door the day of the show.

PHS STUDENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

(Pittsburg, CA) Answering the call for volunteerism this season, over 280 students from Pittsburg High School (PHS) participated in the City's sponsored Mayor's Make A Difference Day event on Saturday, January 17, 2009. The students worked hard to accumulate in excess of 80 yards of leaves and debris that may otherwise have ended up in the City's storm drain conveyance system. City crews along with students cleaned curbs and gutters on Harbor Street, in the Central Addition, along Power Avenue, the Courthouse and City Hall parking lots, as well as general cleanup and graffiti removal in City Park and on the PHS North Campus. Additionally, students assisted in painting curbs at Solari, Central and 12th Streets, and cleaning vehicles and trucks at the City's Corporation Yard. The students were assigned to predetermined work sites by PHS staff and deployed by City staff. In all, it was a very successful volunteer effort resulting in high school credits earned for graduation for their civic volunteerism. "The PHS students were excellent and did a top notch job. We greatly appreciate them for their efforts and having pride in their community." stated Pittsburg Mayor Nancy Parent who also assisted the PHS students in the clean up efforts. Special thanks to Pittsburg Power Company through the Trans Bay Cable Project who provided t-shirts and lunch for all student volunteers.
Two (2) future Mayor's Make A Difference Day events will be scheduled along with PHS staff in May and October 2009.
